MAJ BOB in Baghdad
Hello All,
9 SEP. Well I am leaving for Camp Black Jack today then on to Baghdad
International Airport then a trip to Kuwait where I will wait for a flight
to the states. Should be home in the next 48-72 hours. We briefed our plan
today for the defense of our Base Camp and actions we are to take if we have
a major event during the 8 MMM on the 11th. It was weird briefing a plan
when I was not going to be a part of it. We are the big show in Iraq again
and all sorts of "help" is pouring in. Corps sent us three SEAL sniper
teams. They have a bunch of real cool stuff but our snipers are just as
capable for the distances we are looking at having to shoot. We will never
turn away help and they have a few sights that put ours to shame. Had a
company of MPs move in along with engineers and some military working dogs.
I have everything balanced right now but am wary of leaving. My S4, who
will pick up most of my actions while I am gone, keeps telling me he will be
OK but I still worry. Well I will be off the net for most of the month spending the time with
Susan and the girls. I will reestablish contact upon my return to this
wonderful place. I have instructed the S3 MAJ Ollivant to check my
packages. He will pull the personal stuff and continue to push the candy
and school supplies to our troops who are continuing to get it to the kids.
Got to watch the CSU/CU game on a replay (I am a CSU Grad for those who did
not know). It is amazing how each year CU finds a more unique way to cheat.
Well there is always next year.
See you all soon. Keep your head low and
your powder dry.
Bob in Baghdad 6 Sep
Hello All,
6 SEP. I am back in Baghdad. You know when you have come from a real bad
situation when you are happy to be in Baghdad. I must say I am glad to be
back. The unit that guarded our camp while we were away did a good job.
They were very glad to see us. They got mortared 7 times while we were
away, which is seven times more then they have been mortared on Camp Black
Jack. They said we were crazy to live here. We just smiled and said at
least we ain't in the Najaf Graveyard. We began planning for the 8 Million
Man March, a event where the Shite's come to our shrine to celebrate the
death of the 7th prophet. We expect large crowds, but not the full 8
million (side note Iraqi's count funny---one, two, three, twenty. Their
belief is that if we hustle to kick in a door because one bad guy is holed
up in it then logic tells them if twenty guys are holed up then we will
bring the whole army and move like lighting). A big fear is that the date
for the event falls on Sept 11th, so we think that there will be some sort of event designed to produce civilian casulties and undermine the stability of the Iraqi Government. I will be en route back to the states for leave during this period. I still
am very upset about this situation and the CSM, the Boss and me thought we
had it beat due to the Najaf deal---No such luck. Upon return, the BDE
Commander told my boss we had to go, the CG orders. So I go first then the
CSM then my boss when I get back. I think he is going to swindle out of it
due to the Romandon(sp) period starting. Well Back to work much to do to
catch up. The good news is we have begun planning for our redeployment. Oh
and by the way we had one mortar round land this morning outside our toc. I
think it was the guys across the river welcoming us back. Keep your head
low and your powder dry.
Bob in Baghdad (Najaf) 13 AUG
Hello All
13 AUG. You might have noticed my last e-mail had the wrong date. Sorry
but days and months were sliding together. Today things quieted down as you
can tell by my statements in the attached news articles. The Marines are
doing a good job and we are working well together. The Air force is also in
the game working next to me calling in the big stuff when required. I am
now working the schedules of all the Generals who want to get their pictures
taken in the cemetery. They are coming from everywhere and since the
fighting has slowed (we still shoot the real stupid ones) they deem it safe.
I will say that both the 11th MUE (Marines) and my Bde Headquarters have
made every effort to get us are needed supplies. We have not been in want
of anything except ice. Ice is gold on a battlefield that reaches 120
degrees.
We now are in a holding pattern waiting on the politicians to
resolve the situation. I hope it ends and we can return to Baghdad (I ran
out of baby wipes). The soldiers are doing great and moral is high. They are doing what they joined the Army to do, close with and destroy the enemy. Our casualties have been light and we suffered no KIA, which is a testament to their field craft. It is not over and if it does start back up we will again shoot them
dead among the graves. We have received word that we might move from here
to Kut. This is based on how fast we moved and how effectively we killed
the bad guys. I hope it does not come to pass one time jumping through the
ass is one thing twice becomes problematic. Well got to go. Keep your head
low and your powder dry. See the AP news on the info with Bob in the news.
